History of Thai Massage
Developed over 2,000 years ago, Thai massage is an ancient healing system that combines acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic medicinal ideas and assisted yoga postures to create a dynamic, soothing practice to enhance overall wellbeing. According to the Pali Buddhist lineage, Thai massage was originally founded by Shivago Komarpaj, who was the physician to the Buddha nearly 2,500 years ago. The contemporary practice of Thai massage is an amalgamation of Indian, Chinese and Southeast Asian culture, medical traditions and art.
What is Thai Massage?
Thai massage combines rhythmic movement, soft tissue manipulation, deep stretching and energy balancing techniques. Similar to Shiatsu and other forms of Asian massage, Thai massage includes an understanding of energetic lines or meridians that travel through the body. Rather than simply addressing soft tissue, Thai massage also addresses the energetic continuity of the entire body, feeding into a greater sense of whole body wellness for the client. In Thailand, Thai massage is recognized and regulated by the Thai government as a part of Thai traditional medicine, and is used to treat a wide variety of physical ailments.
What is Thai Massage like?
In contrast to many Western styles of massage therapy, Thai massage is often performed on a thick mat on the floor, but it can also be practiced on a massage table. Additionally, the client wears loose clothing for the session and the massage therapist doesn’t use lotion or oil. Often in Thailand, Thai massage is practiced in a large room with multiple practitioners and clients, however in a Western context it is largely practiced in private settings. All Thai massage treatments at Colorado Body Wisdom are given in a private room. Similarly, we offer traditional Thai massage treatments both on floor mats or on a massage table, depending on the preference of the client.
Thai massage is a relatively active massage practice for both practitioner and client. During the session, the therapist will use fluid movements in various combinations that will position the client on their back, side, front and cross-legged sitting. The massage therapist uses various assisted yoga postures to bring the client into dynamic stretches and movements to increase range of motion and bring energy flow across all joints of the body. In this practice of massage therapy, the therapist uses their entire body to deliver the massage, using hands, feet and legs to position, fix and massage the body in a variety of unique positions. This often includes walking along the back to address imbalances in the spine and its musculature. Other distinctive features of a Thai massage include pulling on fingers and toes, cracking knuckles and stretching the ears.
Benefits of Thai Massage:
Thai massage is organized to work the body in 5 distinct layers: skin, tissue, energetic channels, bone and vital organs. In addressing each of these layers, a Thai massage will promote flexibility, increase circulation, relieve aching muscles and tension, stimulate inner relaxation and mental focus as well as give the recipient a mood boost and sense of energized calm. This style of massage is recommended for those looking to increase flexibility, range of motion, and those more sensitive to other types of massage therapy.
