What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu has a long history, based in the traditional wisdom of East Asian culture, where it is still practiced today. Shiatsu derives from the ancient Japanese practices of anma, which in turn derives from the ancient Chinese practice of tui na. “Shiatsu” literally means “finger pressure” in Japanese and artfully uses the human hands to address both muscular and energetic systems in the client’s body. In this form of massage therapy, the client remains fully clothed, and the massage therapist works through the clothing to access tissue. Shiatsu can be either relaxing or stimulating and can be targeted toward a specific condition or used as a full body tune-up.
The conceptual framework from which Shiatsu is practiced is very similar to the understanding of energetic anatomy from Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, instead of using needles to stimulate the points (tsubos) along the energy channels (meridians) as one does in Acupuncture, Shiatsu applies pressure to these same areas using palms, thumbs, fingers and sometimes feet. This understanding of the network of energetic flow through the human body is grounded in centuries of experiential observation and practice. Similar to an acupuncturist, a massage therapist practicing Shiatsu will often begin a session by examining the client and determine the most effective treatment plan using touch and pulse reading.
Shiatsu also makes use of passive stretching. These stretches feel great and also help to identify and release stagnant areas and joints. This increases energetic flow throughout the whole body. By helping to restore the natural flow of energy (chi/qi) through the meridians, Shiatsu helps to support a client’s overall health.
