Trauma resolution treatments help people who have been through traumatic events, either physically or emotionally, recover balance in their nervous and muscular systems. Trauma causes us to clench and bind to withstand the difficulty of overwhelming circumstances. Without proper treatment to release this tension, we can chronically store trapped energy in our muscles and nervous system.
Trauma resolution therapy releases and redirects that energy to create better responses within the body and recapture vital energy. Our therapists use a variety of methods to help the body release and heal. We can work gently with massage, or start by listening to and reflecting on the emotional state of the client. Your therapist will design sessions with the utmost importance being placed on creating a safe container for expression, compassion, and healing. Often healing is stimulated simply by being in the skilled and loving presence of a professional.
Many people only associate trauma with major, devastating events, but trauma is often experienced subtly. These subtle experiences are often overlooked and over time our nervous system and body become compromised. Any event or circumstance that pulls the autonomic nervous system out of its regular functioning capacity is technically classified as “trauma.”
We can experience nervous system dysregulation when we fall off of a bike, get in a fight with a loved one, or go through periods of financial instability. Other, more noticeable traumas include car accidents, sports injuries, emotional or physical abuse, and betrayal.
The more we are able to take care of ourselves when small things go wrong, the more prepared our nervous system will be to take on the larger challenges of life. Receiving care for trauma resolution, for both past and present incidents, is an important part of maintaining wellness and vitality in mind, body, and spirit.
The Effects of Trauma
Effects of trauma often include shock, denial, unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and anger. In addition to these psycho-emotional ramifications, trauma can also lead to a variety of physical ailments including headaches, nausea, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and digestive problems.
The key to healing from trauma is allowing the autonomic nervous system to regain its state of balance. Bringing present-tense awareness, building feelings of safety and support, and creating avenues for expression of grief, anger, shock, and denial are critical to the healing process. Massage therapy practiced by a massage therapist skilled in trauma and grief management can be especially helpful in providing all three of these.
What to Expect From Trauma Resolution at CBW
No two traumas are the same, and “trauma” can be hard to classify.
- Car accidents and other impact injuries often involve a state of physical shock and fear that needs to be released.
- The loss of a loved one can also be shocking but is more likely to be emotionally charged and overwhelming, bringing in aspects of denial and grief which need to be felt and expressed.
- Traumas involving betrayal, including sexual, physical and verbal abuse, often require that the client regain their sense of safe boundary and protection, in addition to dealing with the psycho-emotional components of shock, grief, and anger.
In all of these cases, providing a safe space with compassionate touch allows the body to process this difficult history in the present, in real-time with the support of a neutral, but a generously present listener. This helps the body to re-establish its orientation to presence, safety, and healing, which provide the ground for the process of grief to unfold safely in its natural sequence.
