Athletes of all ages and abilities can benefit from sports massage. It has been proven to help when you are preparing for a big event, recovering from intense exertion, or just looking for a form of maintenance for the body. Sports massage enhances your performance and helps you to avoid injuries and strains from repetitive movements.
Your massage therapist will work with you to treat the specific areas of the body that are stressed and overused by the repetitive and high-velocity movements required by your exercise regimen. Sports massage successfully intervene in acute problem areas before they develop into chronic problems or pain. Receiving regular sports massage as a part of your training regimen prevents the development of injuries that diminish performance.
Prevent, Prepare, and Recover
Sports massage also effectively helps athletes prepare for an activity or competitive event. It works to prepare the muscles and body to boost performance. The treatment will encourage the blood flow, flexibility, and stamina that is needed for the body to perform to its maximum capacity.
After a vigorous workout or event, the body can feel sore and tired. Sports massage helps to repair the body, by stimulating blood flow and restoring range of motion. Sports massage is shown to decrease the inflammatory markers that cause soreness. As a result, the treatment rejuvenates the body, reduces the recuperative time needed, and helps identify any new or prospective injury sites. When used as a part of a training regimen, sports massage both prepares the body for optimum function and serves as an important and effective method for injury prevention. It is an effective way to promote flexibility, prevent injuries and heal muscle strains and more severe sports injuries.
History of Sports Massage
Sports massage was first used by the ancient Greeks during the Olympics. It gained interest and popularity again in modern times when the Finnish runner, Paavo Nurmi won 5 Olympic Gold medals in 1924, and credited his success in part to the massage therapist who accompanied him to the games and kept his body in shape. In the U.S., sports massage gained popularity and acclaim in the 1970s and 80s when a number of orthopedic doctors and physical therapists began publishing findings on the effectiveness of sports massage and developing the deep friction strokes that are used today in sports massage. Today, sports massage is found in nearly all professional sports, with professional teams employing therapists as an integral part of their team training regimen.
