Why Receive a Pre- or Post-Natal Massage?
During pregnancy and through the postpartum period, the mother’s body is undergoing rapid physiological and hormonal changes. Each phase of the pregnancy brings new challenges for mother and baby. Massage therapists who are experienced in pre- and post-natal massage understand the challenges of each phase of pregnancy, postpartum and are skilled in techniques to meet the side effects of every step. All of our pre- and post-natal massage therapists have studied the process thoroughly and understand all contra-indications and risks to make sure that the massage is delivered safely and with great care.
Pregnancy is not just a time of physical changes and challenges, but emotional ones as well. CBW’s certified pre- and post-natal massage therapists skillfully create a loving container for mother and child, so that the mother can relax and receive care as she continues on her journey of motherhood.
What is Prenatal Massage?
During pregnancy, prenatal massage eases aching muscles and joints, improve circulation, relieve fatigue, reduce swelling and helps the nervous system settle and adjust to the growing child. Therapists are careful to prop the mother in suitable positions that don’t cause strain. Generally, sessions are performed in a side-lying, reclined, or seated position, using plenty of pillows to prop the mother’s body comfortably. Therapists are also trained to avoid areas of contra-indication, including energetic reflexes in the body.
In later stages of pregnancy, pelvic shift and increased lumbar curve can cause joint pain and muscle straining, that only increase as the pregnancy progresses. Prenatal massage specialists are trained to work with common musculoskeletal tensions related to pregnancy, including back aches, neck pain, shoulder tension, and joint pain. Regular massage is an efficient way to combat these pains, as well as fluid retention and swelling. Treating these common discomforts helps the mother to rest and sleep well, which is critical to proper immune function for mother and baby.
Massage can have special benefits for high-risk pregnancies, helping to give resource to the mother’s body. However, for these sessions, the mother must first consult with her doctor and get approval before proceeding with treatment.
What is Postnatal Massage?
After birth, the restoration period can be lengthy. The body has undergone significant changes and oftentimes swelling, decreased circulation and hormonal imbalances can emerge. These can be exacerbated by disrupted sleep cycles and the stress of becoming a new mom. Postnatal massage therapy improves circulation of blood and lymph, boosting immune system function and helping tissues restore themselves faster. Additionally, it settles the autonomic nervous system, which can help regulate anxiety and depression by creating hormonal balance.
Massage therapy is also an effective treatment for problems with breastfeeding, which commonly creates neck and shoulder pain for the mother. In addition to treating these muscle tensions, massage therapy improves circulation, which boosts milk production. New research is also showing that massage can decrease the levels of sodium in breast milk and improve newborn suckling.
