Medical massages function in a medical paradigm and are designed to deliver specific outcomes in relation to a medical diagnosis. Medical massage therapists use critical assessments to create goal-oriented protocols for relief and recovery from a variety of conditions. Medical Massage can consist of techniques from any form of massage therapy, and is also referred to as ‘clinical massage’ or ‘treatment massage.’ Generally, medical massage treatments are tailored to work with individuals suffering from major medical conditions, but can also be a critical addition to a rehabilitative process from injuries.
This style of massage therapy is used in working with people with a variety of chronic or severe conditions including: cancer, TMJ syndrome, tinnitus, fibromyalgia, degenerative/bulging discs, sciatica, thoracic outlet syndrome, numbness in extremities, lymphedema, Parkinson’s, Lupus, MS, ALS, as well as injury-related problems and surgery rehabilitation.
Incorporating Massage Into Your Treatment Protocol
Colorado Body Wisdom’s medical massage therapists are trained to help patients cope with and heal from chronic illnesses as well as injuries of all sorts. Every client’s condition is unique, and every client has their own journey towards recovery. As such, it is necessary to create a specific treatment plan that is right for each person.
Our massage therapists use their extensive training and diverse technical skillset to create a treatment protocol that matches the medical directives of your doctor and also suit the specific needs of your body. Our massage therapists strictly adhere to all medical directives and are trained in avoiding contraindicated areas and techniques. If given permission, we can communicate directly with your primary care physician, physical therapist and/or chiropractor to develop specific protocols for your condition.
Using Health Insurance for Medical Massage
Medical Massages at Colorado Body Wisdom can be covered by health insurance in many cases. Please contact us to learn more and to see if you are eligible. A referral from your primary care physician may be required, and we will work with you to do what is necessary to secure coverage for your treatment. Once your coverage has been secured, we will take care of all billing and communication with your insurance company, so that you can relax and focus on your own healing process.
History of Medical Massage
Massage as a part of medical treatment plans has its roots in many ancient cultures, including China, Japan, Thailand, and India. In the Western world, it began to take root in Europe in the 1800s when a number of scholars began writing on the benefits of massage as a part of a holistic approach to treating a wide range of medical conditions.
Today, medical massage is increasingly used in the United States as a supplement to allopathic treatment, recognized by doctors and some insurance companies. Massage therapy can be an effective way to manage chronic side effects from treatments, facilitate a rehabilitative process, and promote general well-being in the face of illness.
